I´m writing this with a mix of worry and at the same time with tremendous hope.
It´s been 50 days since we rescued Amy. Two months during which she has been transformed.
She arrived to us a completely broken dog, with two open fractures, infected bones, lungs and peppered with bullets.
During this time she has gone through THREE SURGERIES. Each surgery a step forward, fighting against infection as well as rebuilding those broken bones. Amy was affected by a “superbug”, a bacteria resistant to all antibiotics except one, Amikacin. A powerful antibiotic, unfortunately a highly toxic one.
But her treatment is not over yet… the bacteria that nearly killed her did some serious damage in the right leg bone, effectively killing a portion of the bone. We need to operate again, take that dead bone out, do a bone graft and give her leg full stability using a blockage plate… It´s going to be a four hour surgery.
When we rescued Amy we knew her two open fractures would need multiple surgeries, but that each surgery would bring Amy closer to full recovery.
